Kidney donors, recipients meet

In the February edition of The Nebraska Living Times, an article entitled “Son-in-law gives ultimate gift through organ donation” ran (See it here: https://www.nebraskalivingtimes.com/state-and-national-news/son-law-give...). It was about Carol Friesen and her son-in-law Wiley Sowle. Wiley had volunteered to give Carol, who needed a new kidney, one of his kidneys. However, through the transplant process at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, it was discovered that the two were better matched for other donors and recipients who were also waiting at UNMC for a kidney transplant. That is when UNMC created a paired kidney exchange. In all, there were three recipients and three donors in the exchange.  A few months ago the members of that exchange got to meet in am emotional reunion of thanksgiving in Kearney, Neb. Pictured above are, from left, Deb Poland of North Platte, Neb., who provided a kidney to Dalton Cannon of Fort Calhoun, Neb., who is standing in front of her; next is Tia Thompson Cannon, Dalton’s mom, who provided a kidney for Carol Friesen from Wallace, Neb.; and finally Deb Cadek from North Loup, Neb., who received a kidney from Wiley Sowle of Grant, Neb.
